Introducing Naturalist: Sower of Life and Death

Greetings, Adventurers!  Today, we are thrilled to unveil one of the new Archetypes coming with the Treasures Below Expansion (1.1.0): Naturalist. This hybrid Archetype thrives in the dangerous ground where most casters fear to tread, turning what others see as vulnerability into a source of unprecedented power.

Born from countless hours of player feedback and our own vision for expanding RavenQuest's tactical depth, it offers something truly unique: a playstyle that rewards both strategic thinking and aggressive positioning

Whether you're a veteran looking for a fresh challenge or a newcomer seeking an Archetype that grows with your skills, Naturalist provides a blend of accessibility and complexity that we believe will reshape how players approach both solo adventures and group dynamics.

Naturalists are highly attuned to the circle of life, shaping these raw and primal forces into a refined martial art. Often hailed as wardens of the natural balance, they stand at the verdant threshold between life and death, withering and renewal.

Wielding nature-imbued weapons brimming with primal energy, they channel their mastery to both nurture and destroy. Their presence feels like the turning of seasons: serene in stillness, unstoppable in motion. To face them is to face nature itself: unforgiving, cyclical, and eternally evolving.

The Art of Proximity Magic

The Naturalist's combat philosophy makes close-range positioning a source of strength. Unlike conventional mages who maintain distance to ensure safety, they must embrace danger to unlock their full potential.

This proximity-based approach manifests in several key ways throughout the Naturalist's toolkit. Many of their most powerful skills require the caster to be within melee range of their targets, creating an entirely new perspective on battlefield positioning and threat assessment.

The Versatile Heart of Any Party

As a hybrid Support/Off-Healer/DoT Caster, Naturalist fills multiple niches simultaneously, making it one of the most adaptable Archetypes we've ever created. When paired with a dedicated tank and healer, it becomes a damage-dealing support specialist, using their area control skills to manage battlefield flow while contributing meaningful damage through their DoT effects.

In parties lacking a primary healer, it can step up to provide healing support, though their approach differs significantly from traditional healing Archetypes. Naturalist healers must remain actively engaged in combat to maintain their support effectiveness.

When Naturalists are paired with melee-focused Archetypes, particularly those built around the Warfare skill tree, their proximity-based skills create natural synergies with tanks and melee DPS characters, as both Archetypes benefit from close-quarters positioning.

This synergy extends beyond mere positioning convenience, as many of the skills provide buffs that specifically enhance melee effectiveness, while melee allies can provide the protection and threat management that allow Naturalists to operate safely within their optimal range.

When paired with other magical Archetypes, they can provide the frontline magical presence for their more vulnerable allies to act from safer positions. This creates layered magical strategies where different Archetypes cover each other's weaknesses while amplifying their collective strengths.

The self-sufficiency built into the Naturalist's kit, combining damage, healing, and survivability tools also makes it an ideal choice for Adventurers who prefer to explore RavenQuest's world independently.

Signature Mechanics

When a Naturalist deals damage with specific skills, they trigger healing effects that can target themselves, nearby allies, or both depending on the skill used. This creates a good rhythm where maintaining offensive pressure becomes essential for sustaining the party.

Some skills provide immediate healing bursts when they deal damage, rewarding aggressive positioning and precise timing. Others create barrier effects that offer damage mitigation. Still others trigger area healing effects that benefit the entire party. The Archetype's arsenal of slows, snares, and area-of-effect skills allow skilled players to dictate the flow of each fight.

Sustain mastery represents the Archetype's most defining strength, encompassing both personal survivability and the ability to maintain party effectiveness over extended periods. This sustain comes from multiple sources working in harmony: regenerative skills that scale with combat duration, damage-over-time effects that provide consistent pressure without requiring constant attention, and healing mechanics that become more efficient as fights progress.

Shared Cooldown

With the arrival of Naturalist, we are introducing a shared cooldown mechanic for its tier 5 skills. This shared cooldown mechanic serves multiple design purposes beyond simply adding complexity. It prevents the Archetype from becoming overpowered, while also creating opportunities for skilled players to demonstrate mastery through superior decision-making.

The system also adds more value to the Archetype, as different encounters may call for different skill choices, encouraging players to experiment with various approaches.

Naturalist brings a batch of skills designed to empower your style. Today, we're giving you a first look at some of these new skills. While we won't reveal every single detail just yet, you'll get an idea of how each skill functions and what makes them unique. Let's dive into what's coming!

Nature's Strike
A swift melee-range attack that delivers spell damage to a single enemy. With every third cast, your movement speed is temporarily boosted, allowing you to reposition or chase down fleeing foes with greater ease.

Life Touch
This versatile spell can be cast on nearby allies or yourself, healing the target and granting them increased movement speed. Shortly after the initial effect, a burst of energy erupts in a small area around the healed target, dealing damage to enemies standing there.

Spore Spread
An infectious melee spell that not only harms your enemy but leaves behind bubonic spores that amplify the damage of future Spore Spread casts. Upon reaching maximum stacks, the spores are consumed to unleash a potent poison that continues to harm the target over time.

Living Roots Swarm
Unleash a wave of creeping roots in front of you, striking enemies with spell damage and snaring them. Allies caught in the wave receive a protective barrier that absorbs incoming damage for a short duration, offering both offensive and defensive utility in one powerful cast.

Avatar of Decay
Transform into the fearsome Avatar of Decay, radiating dark energy that harms nearby enemies. While in this form, your attacks are empowered, and affected foes are cursed with Decay, a condition that inflicts greater damage the more ongoing effects they suffer from. Activating this form temporarily disables your ability to use Avatar of Rebirth.

Avatar of Rebirth
Take on the sacred mantle of the Avatar of Rebirth, greatly increasing your defenses and restoring health to yourself and nearby allies over time. While in this rejuvenating state, you serve as a beacon of survival. Activating this form temporarily disables your ability to use Avatar of Decay.

All skills shown above are currently undergoing testing and balance adjustments.
Names, effects, and mechanics are subject to change before their release.

RavenCards

For the Naturalist Archetype, new RavenCards will be available to customize and enhance your playstyle. Just like with the skill previews, we won't be revealing all of them just yet, but here's a glimpse of what's to come.

The Thergardian Hero RavenCard empowers Avatar of Decay, causing you to leave behind a trail that slows and damages any enemy who steps through it, while the Poisonpetal Thornmaw RavenCard modifies Spore Spread, replacing its damage-over-time mechanic with an explosive burst that triggers when Bubonic Spores reach three stacks, dealing spell damage to the target and nearby enemies.

Challenges & Counterplay: Understanding the Naturalist's Limits

Every well-designed Archetype must have clear weaknesses and counterplay opportunities, and Naturalist is no exception. These limitations aren't design flaws, they're intentional elements that create tactical depth, encourage diverse strategies, and ensure that no single Archetype can dominate all aspects of gameplay.

Vulnerability to burst damage represents the most significant challenge facing Naturalist players, stemming directly from the Archetype's focus on sustained combat and proximity-based positioning.

The positioning requirements that make Naturalists effective in sustained combat become liabilities when facing opponents capable of rapid burst damage. The close-range positioning necessary for many skills puts them within range of melee burst specialists, while their focus on area control and sustained pressure can leave them vulnerable to ranged burst attacks.

The complexity of managing multiple simultaneous effects, such as damage-over-time skills, area control zones, healing triggers, and positioning requirements, can make it harder to make decisions in high-pressure situations.

We are particularly excited to see how players will push the boundaries of what's possible with Naturalist builds and combinations as we continue to expand the game world with new content, challenges, and systems!
